Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability
Hosted by the National Academies
Washington, DC
June 15, 2004
The Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability held a meeting
June 15, 2004 in Washington, DC to review the previous year's
work and to develop a plan for the upcoming year. Roundtable members
re-emphasized Science & Technology's central role in
sustainable development, illustrated by the "Linking
Knowledge to Action" workshop series established by the
Roundtable. A number of common themes emerged from the activities of
the previous year, including:
A persistent gap between knowledge and action
A great but untapped potential for learning from experience
A need to foster user-producer interactions
The importance of end-to-end systems linking knowledge to action
The value and vulnerability of boundary-spanning organizations
The importance of creating "safe spaces" for innovative risk-taking
The need for appropriate targets and metrics
Many of these themes are inter-related, and the Roundtable continues to
explore opportunities to convene workshops which focus on one or more
of these themes. Members also discussed a number of possible follow-up
activities such as training courses, fellowships, and volunteer
programs with a focal point on bridging the gap between research and
policy in the field of sustainable development.
